Aluminum Alloy 2024 and 7075 Properties

In today's aviation industry, if you want to say which material is used the most, there is no doubt that it must be aluminum alloy. 2024 and 7075 are the earliest and most important two aircraft aluminum alloys.

As a heat-treatable high-strength Al-Cu-Mg aluminum alloy, 2024 aluminum sheet is widely used to make various high-load parts and components due to its high strength and high toughness, excellent heat resistance and good fatigue resistance. Its main applications include aircraft skins, vehicle hubs, ship propellers, etc.

According to the heat treatment temperature, 2024 aluminum mainly has the following tempers like 2024-o, 2024-t3, 2024-t4, 2024-t5 and 2024-t351. The aluminium alloy 2024 mechanical properties may vary due to the tempering of the material. 2024-H112 hardness: about HB85, 2024-T4 hardness: HB120-145, 2024-T351 hardness: HB120-145, 2024-O hardness: about HB40.

7075 aluminum alloy is a high strength, heat treatable wrought alloy developed by Alcoa in 1943. The alloy contains zinc, magnesium, chromium and copper as hardeners, and small amounts of iron, silicon, manganese and titanium. Al-7075 is much stronger than carbon steel after heat treatment. Its common tempers are 7075-T6, T651, T7351, T73, T76, T7651, O, W, W51, etc.

7075 sheet is stress-relieved and will not deform or warp after processing. All ultra-large and ultra-thick 7075 aluminum plates are ultrasonically detected to ensure that there are no blisters and impurities. 7075 aluminum plate has high thermal conductivity, which can shorten the forming time and improve work efficiency. It is often used in the manufacture of aircraft structures.

More than 90% of the thick aluminum plates used in the aerospace industry are produced by heat-treatable aluminum alloys (2XXX, 6XXX, 7XXX alloys) while about 85% of the aluminum alloy thick plates used in other industries are 1xxx, 3xxx and 5xxxx aluminum alloys. Among the aluminum alloy thick plates used in aerospace, the thickness ≤ 75mm accounts for about 95%, the width is not more than 3600mm, and the length is not more than 32.5m.

The typical production process of thick aluminum plates for aviation is as follows: raw material-smelting-casting-ingot homogenization-ingot milling-surface heating-hot rolling-shearing-cold rolling-solution heat treatment-quenching-pre-stretching-ultrasonic flaw detection-artificial aging-eddy current conductivity test-sawing-fine sawing.
