Aviation Aluminum 6063 Properties

Zinc is the main alloying element used in 6063 aluminum. It has above average machinability and good fatigue strength. However, it is less corrosion resistant than many other types of alloys, and it cannot be welded. Aviation aluminum 6063’s common tempers are 6063-T6, 6063-T651, 6063 T7351 and 6063-O.

This alloy is the first Al-Zn-Mg-Cu high-strength alloy to contain chromium, an element that gives aluminum alloy 6063 its excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. 6063 aluminum alloy has a high level of fatigue strength, although it is not weldable, its performance is average, and it has minimal corrosion resistance. However, the alloy's high strength-to-density ratio makes it ideal for applications involving military rifles and rock climbing.

The combination of alloying elements contained in 6063, and the heat treatment process specified for tempering, do not create a perfectly weldable product. Since this product is designed for high strength applications, the introduction of the welded area will reduce the strength of the base and welded area. I am not saying that 6063 cannot be welded, but because of concerns about micro-cracks and reduced strength in the heat-affected zone of the material.

6063 aluminum has a strength similar to many steel alloys, while also offering the benefits of ease of machining, corrosion resistance, and a lightweight metal. Alloy 6063 has reflective properties is lightweight which is an important necessity in aerospace applications. It can withstand the stresses that occur during high-altitude flight, making it ideal for many aircraft structural components.

6063 alloy is also widely used in biking, rock climbing, archery and gun manufacturers. 6063 aluminum rods are especially used in various types of high stress applications. Whether the application involves bicycle components, military-grade rifles, or plastic industrial molds, the 6063 alloy is generally chosen. Other types of highly stressed structural components, such as gears, fuse components and bows, are also fabricated from 6063 aluminum alloy.

Grade 6063 is a highly machinable aluminum alloy, but welding of 6063 is not recommended. The heat treatment of this alloy causes the alloying elements to be evenly dispersed around the aluminum base element. This allows it to chip well at high speeds without clogging the cutting tool.
