Traditional aircraft aluminum alloys for large airplanes are mainly 2xxx aluminium like 2024, 2224, 2324, 2424, 2524, etc. And ultra-high-strength 7xxx aluminum like 7075, 7475, 7050, 7150, 7055 , 7085, etc. After the 1980s, although there has been competition from new materials such as aluminum-lithium alloys, rapidly solidifying aluminum alloys, composite materials, etc., but the traditional 2 series and 7 series aluminum alloys still show strong vitality.

2xxx aluminum alloy, that is, Al-Cu-Mg series, can be heat treated and strengthened. Copper and magnesium are its main alloy elements, and it also contains a small amount of manganese, chromium, and other elements. The copper content of aluminum-copper alloys is 2% to 10%, and alloys containing 4% to 6% Cu have the highest strength. Copper increases the strength and hardness of the alloy, while slightly reducing its elongation.

Aluminum 2024 is one of the strongest 2xxx alloys, with copper and magnesium being the main elements. The most commonly used temper designs include 2024T3, 2024T351, 2024T4, 2024 T6 and 2024T4.

The corrosion resistance of the 2xxx series alloys is not as good as that of most other aluminum alloys, and intergranular corrosion may occur under certain conditions. Therefore, these 2024 aluminum sheets are often coated with high-purity alloys or 6xxx series magnesium-silicon alloys to provide plating protection for the core material, thereby greatly improving corrosion resistance.

2024 aluminum alloy can be strengthened by heat treatment. It has moderate plasticity in quenched and freshly quenched conditions. It has good spot weldability and has a tendency to form intergranular cracks when using gas welding. The alloy has good machinability after quenching and cold work hardening.

2024 t3 sheet is one of the most widely used alloys in airframe structures. It has moderate yield strength, good resistance to fatigue crack growth and good fracture toughness. 2024 aluminum alloy remains an important aircraft structural material due to its excellent damage tolerance and high resistance to fatigue crack growth under T3 aging conditions.
