2xxx aluminum alloy, that is, Al-Cu-Mg series, can be heat treated and strengthened. 2024 aluminum alloy can be strengthened by heat treatment. It has moderate plasticity in quenched and freshly quenched conditions. It has good spot weldability and has a tendency to form intergranular cracks when using gas welding. The alloy has good machinability after quenching and cold work hardening.

It has moderate yield strength, good resistance to fatigue crack growth and good fracture toughness. 2024 aluminum alloy remains an important aircraft structural material due to its excellent damage tolerance and high resistance to fatigue crack growth under T3 aging conditions.
