The Main Aluminum Alloys Used in Aerospace Industry

Aviation aluminum is a kind of ultra-high-strength deformed aluminum alloy, which is widely used in the aerospace industry. Compared with ordinary aluminum alloys, aluminum alloys used in aircraft have higher requirements for strength, hardness, toughness, fatigue resistance, and plasticity.

2024 Aluminum Sheet

This is the most common high-strength aluminum alloy. 2024-T3 aluminum sheet has excellent fatigue resistance. Welding is generally not recommended. Its typical uses are fuselage and wing panel, car roof and aircraft structure. Its ultimate strength is 62000 PSI, and its shear strength is 40,000 PSI.

6061 aluminum sheet has very good corrosion resistance and finishing ability, and good welding performance. The strength level of 6061-T6 aluminum plate is equivalent to low carbon steel. Its typical uses are aircraft landing pads, truck bodies and frames, structural parts, etc.

3003 Aluminum Alloy

It is the most widely used aluminum alloy. The 3003-H14 aluminum plate has good processing properties and can be deep drawn, spinning, welding or brazing. 3003 aluminum plate is not heat-treatable. This kind of aluminum plate is widely used in fairing and baffle plating.

5052 Aluminum Sheet

Among the non-heatable alloys. 5052aluminum has the highest strength. 5052 aluminum sheet has higher fatigue strength than most alloys. 5052 aluminum sheet has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine applications, with excellent workability. 5052 aluminum plates are usually used to build fuel tanks.

7075 Aircraft Aluminum

Aircraft manufacturers use high-strength alloys (mainly 7075 aircraft aluminum) to strengthen aluminum aircraft structures. Aluminum alloy 7075 has copper (1.6%), magnesium (2.5%) and zinc (5.6%) for ultimate strength, but the copper content makes it very difficult to weld. In addition, it has very good anodizing effect and good machining performance.
