The Application of Aluminum in Aerospace And Shipbuilding Industry

Aluminum alloy features low density, good mechanical properties, good processing properties, high recycling value, good electrical conductivity, heat transfer and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in the marine industry, chemical industry, aerospace, metal packaging, transportation, etc.


1. Aerospace industry

Aluminum alloy is the main material used in the manufacture of aircraft. Compared with mild steel used in automobile manufacturing, aluminum alloy is expensive and has a low density. Its relative density is 2.8, only one-third of soft steel density. It also has strong corrosion resistance and convenient processing property, so it is an ideal choice.

The aircraft aluminum mainly has two series 2xxx and 7xxx, including 2024, 2014, 2219. 7050, 7068, Al 7075 t651, etc. Duralumin can be used to manufacture rivets, aircraft propellers and high-strength parts on aircrafts according to the content of its alloying elements.

Super-duralumin is duralumin containing zinc, of which the hardness and strength are higher than duralumin. Different varieties of super-duralumin is used to manufacture various structural parts and high-load parts.

2. Marine industry

Aluminum and aluminum alloys are used more and more widely in the shipbuilding industry, ranging from small motorboats to to submarines. The marine grade aluminum can be used to make ship hulls, support structures, supporting facilities, pipelines, etc.

Aluminum alloys used in the marine industry are mainly aluminum-copper alloys, aluminum-magnesium alloys and aluminum-silicon alloys. Aluminum-magnesium alloys are mainly used for hull shells, water pump pipes, pump shells and frame brackets, etc. The grades are 5086, 5456, 5466, 5083 aluminum plate, etc.

The aluminum-silicon alloy has moderate structural strength, good fluidity, and strong filling ability. It is easy to produce components with high density and complex structure, such as high-pressure valves, cylinder blocks, pumps, gearbox casings, turbine blades, etc.
